Handwork has always been my love, but I would have to choose something different to love today that is more basic in life.....HOPE. Without hope all the rest of the lovely things of life don't have any special flavor or joy. On Saturday of preValentine weekend, I received a call from my sister-in-law that my brother was been transferred by helicopter from a local ER to a major neurology center because he had just suffered a massive stroke. This is a healthy, zestful 60 year old who has never been significantly sick. There were no warning signs. The same day he was admitted, the doctor told his wife that he would never communicate verbally, in writing, or comprehend spoken language again....that his entire language center had been wiped out. On hearing this, my entire world felt like it had come to an end.....the end even of hope...worse than a death. When my sister-in-law sat with my brother a bit later, he squeezed her hand. He was asked to stick out his tongue and he managed to get it to his lips. He was told to smile and his best effort was a raised eyebrow. He repositioned himself before going to sleep by using his good arm to move his right paralyzed arm, and fixed the sheet so it was more to his liking. He gave signs that the doctor was speaking too soon and was trying to extinguish hope, maybe to make everyone thankful for whatever recovery might occur. Whatever, it was devastating and we clung to the evidence to the contrary. Today, a different doctor said that, although 1/3 of the left side of his brain had been hit by the stroke, she believes he has signs of good comprehension, attempts to speak, and her prognosis was much more hopeful. The magic word....HOPE....it is what I love more than anything today....my great love of handwork was again ignited today and it was a day of quiet work and contemplation. Hope is essential to all the rest of the good in life and now I have hope to aid in helping him in his rehab and bringing back someone who is so special to me. Thank God for hope.....in all areas of this life.
ReplyDeleteI, too, love my God and my family, and I love my pastor and his wife. I recently completed Shabby Fabrics' Quilt of Hope and gave it to them for Christmas. It felt so wonderful to give something to them from my heart and hands. The quilt was beautiful and perfect and I got big, big hugs from them. My favorite saying is that there is a pipeline (the Holy Spirit)from my brain to God and to Thomas. His sermons are always just what I need to hear. Our family has been going through a difficult trial the last few months and we started a new bible study entitled, "When Life is Hard." I have learned that we can get through anything with God's love and our faith in Him. I love my salvation and that God gave his only begotten son so that I could be saved. We really serve an Awesome God!!!! Can you tell that my cup runneth over?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your website and all the help you have given me. I love receiving you emails on Monday and Friday mornings.

Well, the obvious, our awesome God, family and friends. My grandbabies (2 and 3) can make me smile like no other. I love hearing them laugh...I mean REALLY laugh like they can't catch their breath laugh. LOL I love to bury my face in their little necks and soak up that sweet baby smell. I wish I could bottle it up and take it home with me until my next visit with them. I do miss them so. I love coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. I love china teacups and the cottage look, which to me is my frou frou side coming out! I love reading blogs and meeting new friends online. Quilters are such wonderful friends! I love the smell and feel of new fabric. Oh my, there is nothing like it! I could waller in it (is that a word? It is in Texas!)! I love looking at fabric and then looking at the finished product. It's like an artist looking at a blank canvas and then seeing the finished painting. Totally so rewarding. I love to share my talents with others. I love your blog and your website (well THAT is a given, too). Oh gosh, there are so many things, but I think I'll stop now. I'm not sure if there is a word limit on here! Thank you for the chance at your most awesome drawing!
