Featured Designer | Kate Spain + Giveaway!

Today on The Shabby, we are chatting with the beautiful and talented Kate Spain! Not only is she the designer of Moda Fabrics' new Horizon collection, Kate also designs bedding, rugs, pillows, kitchen products, paper. Her love of nature is evident in all her designs. Join us as we learn more about Kate and her design process.

First off, thank you so much for inviting me on to The Shabby! I'm so happy to chat with you today.

Which print from Horizon is your favorite?

Horizon is a bit of a departure from my usual style in that I began by hand-carving blocks and printing them to create the repeat patterns. It was the first time I'd ever tried to do this and really had no idea how the process would translate to fabric. But I am so happy with how it turned out! I love that the irregularity, imperfection and handmade quality of the block prints remains intact in the finished fabric. I'd have to say my favorite print in the collection is called "Flora". This photo is the actual block I carved.

And this photo is the fabric printed by Moda.

Wow! That gives a whole new perspective to Horizon, and we love the collection even more now! Can you give us any hints about your next fabric line?

Sure! Here's a sneak peek. This collection is called "Paradiso" and maybe you can tell from the photo... it has a bit of a tropical vibe. It will debut at the International Quilt Market in Houston in October and I'm so excited to show it! More photos to come on my blog and elsewhere very soon.

When working on a new design, how do your ideas start to take shape?

An inseparable part of my creative process is drawing and so I generally begin with a pencil and piece of paper, or a paintbrush. For Horizon, I decided to depart from the usual and began with a pencil, rubber block and a carving tool. No matter which medium I begin with, I find that when I'm actively engaged in creating something, there's a spontaneous energy, motion and emotion in the process that helps to get my creative wheels spinning. Once I have what usually becomes the main print of a collection, I scan my sketches into my computer and digitally interpret them — also in a very spontaneous way. I rarely create mood boards because I really love the freedom of being consumed by the creative process. A mood board, to me, is like buying a plane ticket for a certain destination when most often, I have no idea where a collection will "land" until it's done! Keeps me curious, interested and excited to begin again and again.

What do you do or where do you go to find inspiration?

I'm often reminded that I don’t have to look or go too far to find inspiration that will catapult me forward into a new area to explore. It could be something as simple as the color and shape of a flower or leaf. I'm a passionate gardener and from season-to-season am visually influenced by the flowers, foliage, colors, shapes, structure, light, texture, scents and surprises that happen outside each day. A flower bud is such a different shape/color/feeling as the blossom itself or the seedpod that follows. I am inspired by each stage and the possibilities for designs are endless. I am grateful I get to tune in, with a pencil and my heart, and to continually strive to enhance my connection to our natural world. So I would have to say that my inspiration largely comes from looking around my immediate surroundings and taking notice of what is right under my nose!

What is your favorite color?

Funny you should ask... I used many of my favorite colors in Horizon. I love shades of vibrant greens and serene, energetic blues... ultramarine might be my favorite  — it's the deepest blue in Horizon way down on the bottom of the stack. But I love orange, too!

What is your favorite thing about Moda fabric?

I am so lucky to work with Moda. My favorite thing? There are so many! The people who work there are my favorite part. Everyone seems to love what they do and it's contagious. I also admire how they continue to find innovative ways to reach new quilters (pre-cuts did it for me!) and at the same time to keep things fun and exciting for experienced quilters. They listen to their customers and evolve with the changing trends in the industry.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Kind, creative, and happy.

Besides making quilts, how else do you like to use the fabrics you create?

In addition to making quilts, I've also made fun curtains for our bathroom and changed the fabric print with just about every collection! I'm making some using this print from Horizon now.

But my favorite thing is to see what other people make with my fabric. It's a joy I'll never tire of, and am so grateful to be a {small} part of! Horizon will be shipping very soon and I encourage people to share their projects with me on social media. Can't wait to see!

Thank you, Kate, for taking the time to share part of your story with us! We are excited to be carrying Horizon and, in the future, Paradiso too!
